Help with processing trauma

Trauma leaves its mark—both mentally and physically. You might feel constantly on edge, as if you always need to be alert. Or perhaps you struggle with feelings of guilt, shame, powerlessness, or self-doubt. Traumatic experiences can also cause sleeping problems, nightmares or sudden flashbacks that take you back to that one moment or to different moments you’d rather forget. You may also find it difficult to trust others or to truly open up.

Post-traumatic stress or trauma can develop after a deeply distressing event that left you feeling intense fear or helplessness. But trauma isn’t always the result of a single moment—it can also stem from long-term stressful or harmful experiences. No matter how you suffered trauma, its effects can deeply impact your daily life.

You don’t have to carry this burden alone. There are ways to reduce your symptoms and get your life back. With the right guidance, you can learn to process your experiences and regain a sense of peace and control.

Healing from trauma

Processing trauma means learning how to stay calm when you encounter situations, people, images, thoughts, sounds, or physical sensations that bring back memories of the past. Once you have processed your trauma, you can fully engage with the present, reconnect with the people around you, and no longer feel the need to hide parts of yourself from yourself or your loved ones.

One effective method for trauma processing is EMDR therapy. EMDR allows you to process traumatic memories without needing to talk about them extensively. During the sessions, you will be asked to recall an emotionally charged event while simultaneously focusing on a specific task—such as following a moving light or responding to other sensory stimuli. This process helps your brain reprocess distressing memories, making them less overwhelming. You can read more about how EMDR works here.

Another, more in-depth approach is Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT helps you gain a deeper understanding of your emotions and process them in a meaningful way. The video below explains why addressing deeper emotions is essential for healing from trauma.

Trauma Processing with Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

In EFT, your emotions are the focus. Trauma can cause feelings such as fear, guilt, or anger to be suppressed or feel overwhelming. In a safe and supportive environment, you will gradually learn to recognize and process these emotions. Through guided exercises, you will discover how to release stuck emotions and replace them with more helpfull feelings.

The therapy consists of three phases and usually takes between eight and twelve sessions.

  • Becoming aware of your emotions
Together, we explore your emotional responses so that you can better understand how the trauma has affected you. You will learn to recognize and name emotions like fear, anger, guilt, or shame. This increases your emotional awareness — helping you answer the question, “What am I feeling, and what do I need?” It also supports you in breaking patterns of avoidance.
  • Processing your emotions
In this phase, we focus on working through your feelings. I will guide you in safely experiencing and processing emotions that may have been buried for a long time, such as sadness or anger. Through specific exercises, you will gently access the core of the trauma in a safe space. The goal is to release old pain in a way that feels secure and manageable.
  • Integrating new emotional experiences
Finally, you will learn to approach yourself and your trauma with more kindness and self-compassion. You will develop new, healthier ways of dealing with emotions. Letting go of old pain creates space for growth and healing.
