EMDR therapy

Certain events can have a profound impact on our lives. In many cases, we process these experiences on our own, but sometimes they continue to haunt us. Memories can surface involuntarily, accompanied by intense emotions, vivid images, and physical reactions.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is often an effective therapy for psychological distress caused by traumatic experiences. This may include symptoms such as avoidance behaviour, sadness, anxiety, shame, guilt, or anger. There can be various underlying causes. In practice, we often see that issues stem from emotional neglect, medical procedures, workplace problems, bullying, or personal loss.

EMDR: effective for trauma processing

Distressing memories are often unconsciously triggered by situations that resemble the original trauma, leading to intense emotions and stress responses. With EMDR, I help you process these memories so they no longer have power over your daily life.

Since the development of EMDR in the 1990s, extensive scientific research has been conducted on its effectiveness. Studies show that many people experience positive results quickly. EMDR is a short-term therapy: for a single trauma, noticeable improvements are often seen within just a few sessions, reducing its impact on daily functioning.

How does EMDR work?

During an EMDR session, I ask you to recall the distressing event, including the associated images, thoughts, and feelings. This helps bring information about the experience to the surface. Then, the processing phase begins. While vividly recalling the memory, you simultaneously perform a task that requires concentration, such as following a moving light or listening to alternating sounds through headphones.

After each set (e.g., 25 eye movements), I ask you what comes to mind. Often, something shifts—your emotions, thoughts, or physical responses may change. We repeat this process as many times as needed to reduce the emotional intensity of the memory.

What to expect from EMDR?

Through sets of eye movements or auditory cues, the memory gradually loses its emotional charge. This makes it easier to think about without feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes, the images themselves change—they may become blurrier or smaller—or you may gain new insights that make the event feel less threatening. This way, the experience gradually finds its place in your life story.

Possible reactions after an EMDR session

Everyone reacts differently after a session. Some people feel immediate relief and energy, while others feel tired or notice lingering emotions. Sometimes, unexpected memories or feelings emerge, which can be intense. This is a normal part of the processing phase and usually lasts only a few days. Keeping a journal of your experiences can be helpful so we can discuss them in the next session.

Is EMDR right for you?

During an intake session, we will discuss your concerns and the goals you want to achieve. I will also assess whether EMDR is the right approach for you at this time or whether a different therapy might be more suitable.
